How Geelong home owners should be using their hydronic heating system efficiently

When you have installed hydronic heating in your home, it is important that you use your system wisely, including having regular services on your system, ensuring it is working to an optimal level. Here are some other tips you can use to reduce your heating costs, and still be comfortable.

-Minimise the area to be heated including zoning: with hydronic heating, you are able to control each panel individually. You can turn panels on and off as you please, as well as setting the thermostatic valve to adjust the temperature on each individual panel. With hydronic heating, you can also zone certain areas of your home. You can control what zones you are using, and what temperature you are wanting these zones to running at.

-Use your thermostat correctly: set your thermostat on between 18°C and 20°C for living areas. Every degree higher than this can raise your bill by up to 10 per cent.

-Positioning of thermostat: place thermostat in living rooms as this is where you spend most of your time. The positioning of the thermostat is important. Do not place it where there are draughts and heat sources in direct sunlight.

-Turn heating off when possible: it is far more energy efficient and reduces your energy bills, if you turn you heating off while you are out, or overnight while sleeping. You are able to turn it on again when you wake in the morning (using a timer) to make sure that you and your family stay nice and warm. Once your hydronic heating system is turned off, your home will hold the heat for a long time, unlike gas ducted heating. Turn your heating off when you go away on holiday or for an extended period of time. Your heating system does not need to be running whilst you are away.

-Insulate your home: insulating the ceiling, walls and floors of your home is vital if you are wanting to reduce your energy bills. With a well insulated home, your home will hold the heat in much better than a home with poor insulation. Other ways of keeping the heat in is to close windows and blinds, preventing heat loss through windows. Double and triple glazed windows are also a good way of preventing the warm air from escaping from your home.

-Draught-proof your home: another way to prevent heat loss generated by your heating system is by sealing gaps around doors and windows, preventing draughts.

-Regular maintenance of your hydronic heating system: the positioning of your hydronic heating panels in your home if vital. Make sure that you get a licensed installer to service your hydronic heating system regularly to ensure it is running at optimal level. Regular power flushing of your hydronic system is important, ensuring the water running through your system is clean.
