Five ways to reduce your heating bill

At Heating Plus, we are passionate about ensuring that your heating and cooling bills are kept to a minimum. Here are some tips that you might find useful when trying to find ways of lowering your energy consumption:

1. Setting your thermostat to the correct temperature: It is important to maintain an ambient heat when heating your home using hydronic heating. We recommend that on the cooler winter days, setting your thermostat to approximately 20-22 degrees celsius is an ideal temperature. Any higher than this, and your system will be working too hard, raising you energy bills. We also recommend setting your thermostat to a minimum of 12 degrees celsius overnight. Your hydronic heating system does not need to be running all day in winter. If you have your thermostat set at these temperatures morning and night, your house should stay warm through the day if you set your system to turn off during the middle of the day. Hydronic heating is a great form of heating for keeping the whole home warm for a long period of time once it has been turned off, especially in comparison to gas ducted heating.

2. Don’t let heat escape unnecessarily: Keep windows and doors shut when the heat is on. If your home has a fireplace, ensure the flue is closed when you are not using it. It is also vital to turn of ventilation fans in your kitchen and bathroom when they aren’t in use.

3. Keep windows covered when it is dark outside: Ultimately double glazed windows are a much better insulator than single glazed windows. It is also important to close windows/blinds when it is dark outside. But it is important to let the sunlight in through the day, when it’s sunny outside.

4. Ensuring you get your heating system serviced regularly: By getting your heating system regularly serviced, you ensure that it is running most efficiently. Annual servicing of your heating system is necessary, as well as regular power flushes of your hydronic heating system.

5: Ensure that you choose the most appropriate heating for your home design: When you are looking to up-grade your heating, explore all types and select the best that you can afford. There are many things to take into consideration when working out which heating system will be best for you, ultimately keeping you heating bills to a minimum. The team at Heating Plus can help you explore the many different types of hydronic heating available. From panels, designer radiators, trench heating or floor heating.  We will come to you, inspect your home, measure and recommend the best mix for you. It is also important to keep in mind external factors, such as glazing on windows, building materials and ceiling height when sizing your hydronic heating system.

The key to saving on heating bills is to reduce wastage. Hydronic heating excels in this area because it is airless, can be zoned by room, and is controlled by a central thermostat.
